Summary
Knokk is a desktop email and messaging client for macOS. We do not operate servers. All your data stays on your Mac or travels directly to the services you connect. We collect nothing.
1. Information we collect
None. Knokk does not collect analytics, telemetry, crash reports, or usage data of any kind. There is no account system. No information about you or your use of the app is transmitted to us.
2. Data stored on your device
Knokk stores the following data locally on your Mac only:
-
Email account credentials
Server names, ports, and usernames are stored in macOS Keychain. App Passwords and App-Specific Passwords are stored in macOS Keychain and are never sent to Knokk.
-
Cached email data
Email headers and message bodies are cached in the app's userData directory on your Mac to enable fast, offline-capable browsing.
-
UI preferences
Theme, signature, focus timer, and similar settings are stored in local app storage on your Mac.
-
Webview session data
Each connected messaging platform (WhatsApp, Messenger, etc.) has its own isolated session partition stored on your Mac. Sessions are never shared between platforms.
3. Third-party services Knokk connects to
Knokk makes direct connections to the following external services on your behalf. Knokk does not proxy or inspect this traffic.
-
Your email provider
Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, and others. Knokk connects directly over TLS using the credentials you provide. Your email provider's own privacy policy governs that relationship.
-
Gravatar
Knokk fetches sender avatars using a hashed (MD5) version of the sender's email address. No personally identifiable information is sent beyond the hash.
-
Google S2 favicons
Used as brand logo fallbacks for email senders (e.g. a company's domain icon). Only the sender domain is sent — no email content.
-
Sign in with Apple
Used only during iCloud Mail account setup. See section 4.
-
Connected messaging platforms
WhatsApp Web, Messenger, Telegram, Instagram, LinkedIn, Discord, and Snapchat run inside an isolated container using each platform's official web client. Each platform's own privacy policy applies. Knokk does not intercept or read the content of these sessions.
4. Sign in with Apple
Knokk uses Sign in with Apple only to pre-fill your iCloud mail address during account setup. We request only your email address and nothing else. We do not store it on any server — the address is written directly into the account form on your device and used only to configure the IMAP connection.
5. Children's privacy
Knokk is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any data from children. Because Knokk collects no data at all, no special handling is required — but if you believe a child has been affected in any way, please contact us.
6. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent version. Continued use of the app after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
7. Contact
For any privacy questions, contact carl.hagerling@gmail.com.
Effective for Knokk version 2.0.7 and later.
